It’s hard to believe it’s been a quarter of a century since ‘Levelling the Land’, perhaps the most famous Levellers album was unleashed upon the public.
That’s what tonight, and indeed this whole tour is about, with the entire album being played back to back to mark its 25th anniversary.
With some albums, such a performance might seem like quite a chore, but not ‘Levelling the Land’, with every track still feeling as fresh now as when it was first released.
The Levellers are one of those bands that despite growing a bit older, haven’t lost their energy or their edge, and neither have their audience who are as engaged now as they were when I first saw the band back in 1997.
In addition to the entirety of ‘Levelling The Land’, we’re also treated to the almost compulsory ‘What A Beautiful Day’, ‘This Garden’ from the much underrated eponymous album and the more recent anarchist anthem ‘Truth Is’ among others.
With so many bands from the ‘90s currently trudging round the small venue circuit, their glory days long forgotten, it’s quite encouraging to see that a band like the Levellers can still pack out a venue like the O2… even if it does mean we all have to pay a bit more for beer!
