Def Neon – Def Neon (Analogue Trash) Review

There’s something quite encouraging about seeing these sorts of electro-rock duos doing well for themselves. It goes to show that not being able to find a drummer you can get along with really shouldn’t be a deterrent from pushing ahead with making records and playing shows.

One such duo is Def Neon, formed from the remnants of Jed Is Dead, with a self-titled debut album that presents the listener with a mixture of synth-pop, indie rock, electro and bass music.

Def Neon consist of Emily on vocals and bass and Mickey on everything else… which is quite impressive seeing how much else there is, with every track seeming to feature a veritable ensemble of synths as well as some hard rocking guitars.

There’s an undeniable eighties vibe to Def Neon, not least because of the aforementioned synths and the programmed drums, but at the same time, I can’t help but feel I’m hearing something quite refreshing.

A particular stand out track for me was ‘Winter’, with its infectious hookline “We’re longing for December… How long before December?” and its cascading synth intro.

As debut releases go, Def Neon by Def Neon is certainly no disappointment, and it’s exciting to think that this is just the beginning.
